In "New Rhythms," I wanted to create a minimalistic Zen reduction painting that was full of motion yet very tranquil, which created new rhythms within. Lots of new forms simultaneously emerge while others disappear. As though it were an abstract still life, trying to observe and define while the image metamorphoses continually into something new.
The theme of shamanic death and rebirth is of continuous fascination to me, and it synchronises really well with new forms emerging through the paint, albeit with a slightly surreal edge to create a metamorphic reality.
Artistically, I was influenced by some of Cy Twombly's and Lee Krasner's mark-making while creating this painting.
