'Eternal City 1' is an abstract meditation painting. It is heavily influenced by two of my favourite artists, Cy Twombly and Alberto Giacometti. I intended to construct the Eternal City, an otherworldly, ethereal environment of spiritual towers bathed in a beautiful pink aura. A place to reflect on life in a landscape with no horizon, where the viewer can melt into the warm pink atmosphere and feel at peace.
It was made with multiple layers of very liquid acrylic paint, which dried quickly, allowing me to build up all the numerous layerings to obtain the depth created.
It is a very tranquil, meditative painting for me. When I was making it, I often thought of Mark Rothko's series known as The Seagram restaurant paintings, which are on display in the Tate Britain museum.
